Have Skillet Will Travel
The Have Electric Skillet, Will Travel program is full of success stories. Among those successes is Andrea Stinson, an EEA who started out as a client. As a new single mother raising twin boys and living on public assistance Andrea took EFNEP-twice! "I was the leader for the Mothers of Multiples Group in Enumclaw," she says, "and EFNEP had a lot of great tips I could pass on to the other mothers." Her Extension Education Assistant (EEA), Susan Hauck, recognized Andrea's great potential and encouraged her to apply for an EEA position. With Susan as her mentor, Andrea began working 20 hours a week in South King County in the summer of 1998.
A little more than two years after beginning work for EFNEP, Andrea now works 30 hours per week and is training and mentoring the new hires. "I'm a strong believer in giving back to my community," she says, "and becoming an EFNEP EEA was a way to do that and to get paid at the same time."
Among Andrea's clients are immigrants from Russia, Ukraine, Samoa, North Africa and Central America, as well as Native Americans. Andrea speaks German and is learning about Hispanic language and culture -- and she makes a great pot of black beans. Clients and agencies always comment on Andrea's warm-hearted friendliness and the great recipes she teaches clients to prepare. "Clients don't care how much you know," says Andrea, "until they know how much you care."
