CHANGE in the Schools

Can I bring CHANGE to my school?
Programs are available free of charge to schools in King County in which 50% or more children attending qualify for free or reduced lunch. Your school principal will know the correct percentage for your school. Although schools do not pay money for CHANGE, we do require an in-kind contribution. If your school does not qualify for free programming, please see below.

How do schools contribute to CHANGE?
Funded by a federal matching grant from the USDA Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program, Food $ense CHANGE is compensated based on the amount of hours that school teachers (non-federally funded) and other school employees spend assisting with the delivery of nutrition education throughout the school year.

How does that work?
In addition to the 10 hours spent in the classroom with Food $ense educators during CHANGE lessons, and 3 hours of curriculum training provided to teachers during the school year, teachers must spend an additional 19 hours (approximately 45 minutes per week during the school year) applying nutrition concepts in the course of the daily curriculum.

Is it hard to do?
Most teachers find it easy to incorporate nutrition related activities once they give it a little thought. Food $ense educators can provide supplemental activities, such as grade-appropriate writing prompts and word searches, that tie nutrition education into daily activities

Other nutrition related activities:

  • Reinforcing the importance of hand washing
  • Serving healthy snacks
  • Emphasizing the science concepts of nutrition (minerals, energy, etc.)
  • Measuring plant growth and integrating it into a math lesson
  • Reading food and health related stories (especially in grades K-3)

To bring CHANGE to your school, please contact Susie Hauck by e-mail or at 206-205-3217.

What if my school is not eligible for free programming?
Schools in King County that are not eligible should contact Martha Aitken, Program Manager, by e-mail or phone (206-205-3210) about purchasing programming. In addition, the CHANGE curriculum is available to everyone in downloadable in pdf format.
