Mapping Food Insecurity and Access in Seattle and King County Issue Paper No. 4 - May 2008
Although food systems in the United States are largely market-based, local governments and community advocates can decrease food insecurity, beyond providing emergency food sources to those who need it most. This starts with understanding how food access and food insecurity differ from community to community. Comprehensive information about how food access and

Greenhouse Gas Emissions and the Local Food System Issue Paper No. 3 - January 2008
Most of us know that climate change is associated with human activity, especially the production and use of energy. A significant portion of this stems from a globalized food system. To better understand the climate impact of food in Washington, researchers at the University of Washington assessed and compared greenhouse gas emissions of locally and globally sourced food items. 2007 Farm Bill Legislation to Support a Healthy Food System for Seattle and King County Issue Paper No. 1 - July 2007
Moving our food from seed to table involves a complex system of policies, programs and practices. This system is heavily influenced by the federal Farm Bill. This omnibus legislation affects agriculture, trade policy, access to food and nutrition, environmental stewardship, and conservation of natural resources. Sound Food Report: Enhancing Seattle's Food System A Report to the City of Seattle. Through a project grant from the Henry Luce foundation, City of Seattle staff and members of the University of Washington’s Environmental Management program this project was designed to characterize the Seattle area food system and recommend ways the city could enhance the functions of the food system, particularly with regard to environmental sustainability and social justice.

Seattle Food System Enhancement Study: Greenhouse Gas Emissions
This study compares the greenhouse gas impact of two similar plates of food by completing a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for all of the individual items on each plate.
