Know Your Government
The purpose of Know Your Government (KYG) is to provide opportunities for 4-H members, 7th through 12th grade (minimum age of 14), to learn about county government and to use that knowledge to better serve the community and become active participants through civic engagements.
The goals are to:
- Learn how county government functions.
- Promote responsible citizenship.
- Form an interactive relationship with county government.
- Increase public awareness of 4-H and county government.
- Develop leadership potential in youth.
- Provide opportunities for youth to share their experiences at the county, state, national, and international levels.
Also, youth receive training within each county regarding varying aspects of state government. The county teen KYG representatives then join together for the KYG Conference held each year in Olympia.
The KYG Conference serves to strengthen the connection between youth and our political and social networks through education, experience, application and inspiration. This connection will motivate delegates to be participants in democracy. KYG strives to teach a certain level of civics and governance to our 4-H participants. Taking an active role in the democratic process is key to the 4-H KYG Conference.
